2018 Suzuki GSX-S1000F ABS

The consummate sport-tourer.

2018 Suzuki GSX-S1000F ABSCRS

Rather than totally retire the 2005–’08 GSX-R1000 when the redesigned 2009 model arrived, Suzuki repurposed it as a sport-tourer, the GSX-S1000F ABS shown here. As such, instead of speed-racer bodywork and crouching clip-on bars, it offers a taller fairing and windscreen, a higher and wider touring-friendly handlebar, and an upright seating position in a more open cockpit. Practically speaking, the result is a touring-spec superbike.

Compared to the current GSX-R1000, the GSX-S1000F ABS engine has slightly smaller bore and slightly longer stroke dimensions; this helps boosts low-rpm and midrange torque, so the GSX-S can carry luggage and make passes with fewer downshifts. For 2018, the bike gets refined clutch operation and a claimed power increase. Although its engineering is a decade old, the GSX-S1000F ABS still has some delicious features, such as an inverted fork, traction control, four-piston Brembo front brake calipers, and antilock brakes. The 17-inch tire sizes are identical to the current GSX-R1000’s, so you can easily fit stickier rubber and tackle a trackday if the spirit moves you. Just take off that accessory tank bag first!

Likes: Superbike heart, sport-touring soul.

Dislikes: The passenger seating is nowhere near touring-friendly.

Verdict: A worthy sport-touring adaptation of a previous-generation superbike.
