New Band News -- The Cult Will Play Sturgis Buffalo Chip 2014

Hard rock revivalists are back to rock the main stage

The main stage at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip will take a pounding on Saturday, Aug. 2 when The Cult lets loose before a sea of fans. The band has been described as heavy metal revivalists with a touch of pseudo-mysticism inspired by The Doors, and this heavy-handed beat is guaranteed to bring fans to their feet.

Concert attendees can expect the same recipe of hard-alternative, heavy-metal and gothic-punk rock the British band has been creating since the release of its first album, “Dreamtime,” in 1984. The Cult’s epic journey through personal tragedies helped the band create music that reaches beyond the usual pop rock fluff. Lead singer and founding band member, Ian Astbury, began his career following anarchist punk bands in Liverpool, living in squats and forming musical connections that would later be instrumental in the formation of early Cult hits like “She Sells Sanctuary” and “Fire Woman.” Guitarist and founding band member, Billy Duffy, was also heavily influenced by Manchester’s ‘80s punk rock movement, and by the time The Cult released its third album, “Electric” Duffy was leading the band into a metal-blues sound. The eclectic beginnings of these two songwriters gelled and quickly garnered a dedicated following for the band.

The Cult is the first band announced to play the Sturgis Buffalo Chip main stage on the nine-day festival’s first Saturday. Bands sharing the stage with The Cult will be announced soon.
