New H-D Softail For CVO

2014 H-D CVOs Roll Out

Lost in the hullbaloo of the new Project Rushmore Touring bikes is the fact that Harley-Davidson debuted a couple of CVO models for 2014 as well. The new kid to the Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) block is the Softail Deluxe model, which combines the clean lines of the Harley Softail chassis and a distinctive Art Deco paint scheme with the higher-performance Screamin Eagle 110 engine, and adds tour-ready technology as a bonus. The CVO Softail joins the CVO Road King, the CVO Breakout and the CVO Limited in the line for 2014.

The Softail Deluxe has always been about nostalgia, so it's not surprising the CVO version aims to project both performance and timeless styling, according to Harley-Davidson Styling Manager Kirk Rasmussen.

"The CVO Softail Deluxe is a fast classic," says Rasmussen. "Influenced by the Art Deco tradition of streamlining, we use many long, low lines on this bike. The luggage rack, the low-profile chrome console, the eyebrows on the headlight , the medallions on the tank and saddle bags... work together to lengthen this bike's profile. The Airflow paint scheme is a classic design from the pre-war era."

Its low center of gravity and compact rider triangle makes the CVO Softail Deluxe a good option for smaller riders too; laden seat height is just 24 inches, and the embossed-leather, hand-stitched seat is shaped to be narrow at the nose for an easier reach to the ground. A low-rise handlebar and pull-back risers create a shorter reach to the hand controls. Finally, new smaller-diameter Slipstream Collection are said to offer a better fit for smaller hands.

Convertible components make it easy to transform the CVO Softail Deluxe from a touring machine to a boulevard bike. The quick-detach windshield can be popped off (along with the integrated Road Tech zumo 660 GPS), as can the leather-covered saddlebags and detachable backrest and luggage rack. Viola, a boulevard cruiser. For a solo-seat look, the passenger pillion can be removed, if you want to expose more of that CVO paint on the fender.

Motivating this beauty is the Screamin' Eagle Twin Cam 110B™ engine, a 110-cid V-Twin pumping out 108 ft. lbs. of torque. The Softail® chassis mimics the clean lines of a vintage hardtail, but tucks a pair of coil-over shock absorbers mounted horizontally and out of sight within the frame rails for suspension control. The new Daymaker LED headlamp and fog lamps make it into this model as well, for superior night time illumination. Electronic cruise control, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), keyless ignition, and the Harley-Davidson® Smart Security System are standard equipment on the CVO Softail Deluxe.

Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) helps the rider maintain control during braking events, especially those that happen in less-than-optimal conditions. Front and rear brake lines are braided stainless steel.

A Daymaker LED headlight and Daymaker LED fog lamps deliver bright, white light in a pattern that is highly focused. The Daymaker headlamp has two D-shaped lenses: one that focuses light into a pool directly in front of the bike for outstanding low-beam illumination, and another separate high-beam projector that delivers a super-bright, focused beam to penetrate deep into the night.

The embossed leather seat and detachable passenger pillion look hand-tooled, and are finished with contrasting thread. Laden seat height is 24 inches.

Detachable sissy bar and luggage rack are easily removed.

Detachable black leather-covered saddlebags are lockable.

Detachable full-size windshield features an integrated Road Tech zumo 660 GPS Navigator with a 4.3-inch color screen, voice prompts and custom Harley-Davidson mapping software.

A riser-mounted combination digital speedometer/analog tachometer incorporates a fuel-level indicator, gear indicator, and LED indicator lights.

Chrome 9-Spoke Cast Aluminum wheels are wrapped in nostalgic wide whitewall tires.

Chrome low-rise 1.25-inch-diameter handlebar is internally wired and supported by pull-back chrome risers and top clamp.

Slipstream Collection accessories include grips, shifter pegs, brake pedal pad, footboards, and passenger pegs.

Chrome, shorty dual exhaust system is finished with slashdown chrome mufflers and chrome heat shields.

Integrated stop/tail/turn lights clean up the rear fender styling.
