Ride2Read Rally
June 7, 2008
Garden City, Idaho

The fifth annual Ride2Read raises funds primarily for small Idaho libraries and other nonprofit groups that provide books or reading lessons. The R2R event has collected thousands of dollars in fees, sponsorships and donations over the years. The all-volunteer effort donates 100% of what it collects.

Event founder Jerome Eberharter says the 2008 ride will attract more motorcyclists than ever because the 100-mile route along a national scenic byway is a riding favorite. This year's goal is to raise $20,000. All makes, models of motorcycles and scooters are encouraged.

About 11 million U.S. adults - about one in 20 - have such poor English skills that they can't read a newspaper, understand the directions on a bottle of pills or, in many cases, carry on a basic conversation. About 30 million adults have "below basic" reading skills, according the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) report.

Riders will gather at White Cloud Coffee headquarters in Garden City for breakfast before the event. Registration is $40 for single bikes and $75 for a couple riding two-up. Participants will receive shirts and goodie bags.

The festivities will culminate in a spectacular police-escorted ride on June 29 when approximately 1,000 motorcycles are expected to rev up their engines at Qwest Field in downtown Seattle and ride to the White River Amphitheatre 35 miles away, where a concert and BBQ food fair await. Other weekend events include a celebrity-studded dinner gala and auction, where a jaw-dropping custom bike from internationally renowned builder Brian Klock will be auctioned off.
