2018 Yamaha Star Eluder

Low but definitely not slow.

Yamaha calls the Star Eluder “the ultimate V-twin bagger.” That’s a pretty big claim given the full-swagger nature of the bagger segment and the discerning riders who pilot these chopped touring bikes. But let’s go make our visit. The Star Eluder is based on the premium Star Venture touring rig, beginning with its air-cooled 1,854cc V-twin, six-speed gearbox, and belt final drive, and extending to its hybrid steel and aluminum frame, and linked braking system with electronic brake-force distribution and ABS.

Due to its abbreviated fairing, cut-down windshield, and lack of a top trunk, the Star Eluder is narrower, lower, and shorter (as well as 82 pounds lighter, hooray!) than the Star Venture—a good thing. Other unique Star Eluder touches include blacked-out wheels and exhausts, and a choice of blue, black, or silver paint (versus gray or “Raspberry” on the Star Venture). One happy common feature is the big 6.6-gallon fuel tank; given the Star twins’ 34-mpg rating, it allows a theoretical touring range of more than 220 miles. A GT package adds a CB radio, a navigation system, SiriusXM radio, and an alarm system.

Likes: Big fairing, sporty radial-tire profile, passenger grab handles

Dislikes: The 67.3-inch wheelbase compromises agility

Verdict: Bagger swagger from a superbike maker
