Progressive’s IMS Outdoors show series is continuing its sweep across the country, marking its sixth stop in Lakeland, Florida, over the weekend. That means round 6 of the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show was in town, unveiling awesome custom machines that competed in several classes, including Custom Street, Custom Classic, and Freestyle, as well as the wild and woolly People’s Choice Award. (If you’re wondering what happened to the round 5 winners from the Nashville, Tennessee, show 10 days ago, so are we; no information was forthcoming.) Winners from each category here then go head to head for the grand prize in the championship round in Atlanta. Check out some of the winners from Florida below.
Michael Perfetto secured runner-up in the Custom Classic group with his 1948 Harley-Davidson Panhead, built by Wendell Turner and featuring a Denver’s frame, a Gary Littlejohn coffin gas tank, and 1,200cc engine, with custom paint by Chop Doc’s.
In Custom Street, Mindy Hunley took first place with a long and low 2010 Harley-Davidson FLTRX that was redesigned this year by Hunley and painter Joe Clark. You can’t miss the bike’s heavily raked front end that’s dominated by a 30-inch wheel, and also features air ride and a custom fairing. The stretched bags are capped by massive stereo speakers.
Winning the Freestyle category was Brian Buttera with a 1977 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead boasting a handmade stainless rigid frame and girder front end, with the handlebar, rear struts, and exhaust also crafted in steel. A solid brass rear fender and other components offer contrast, while the handmade gas and oil tanks plus a bead-rolled aluminum seat serve as icing on the cake.
Hunley’s Harley FLTRX came out on top in another category too, winning the People’s Choice Award. The stretched and slammed bike moves on to the championship round in Atlanta.
To sum up the rules, all judging considers the following criteria: paint; metal finishes; functionality; drivetrain/engineering design and originality; chassis/engineering design and originality; and overall impact.
