Kawasaki’s midsize muscle.

Among various models carrying the Vulcan nameplate, only these three have Kawasaki’s 55-degree 903cc V-twin. And so, the Vulcan 900 Classic, Vulcan 900 Classic LT, and Vulcan 900 Custom represent the midpoint of the overall Vulcan lineup, which ranges from 649cc to 1,700cc. Starting from the bottom floor here, the Vulcan 900 Classic is a stripped-down retro-cruiser with 16-inch front and 15-inch rear wire-spoked wheels, whitewall tires, forward-mounted floorboards and controls, and a low 26.8-inch seat. Think “Johnny” from The Wild One in attitude.

Take this 'tude on tour aboard the Vulcan 900 Classic LT. Touring features include a height-adjustable windshield, a studded dual seat and passenger backrest, and studded leather saddlebags. The SOHC V-twin, five-speed transmission, and belt final drive remain, but blackwall tires dial back the retro feel. The Vulcan 900 Custom, as Monty Python said, is "something completely different." It drops any semblance of old school in favor of a big 21-inch cast alloy front wheel carrying an ultra-narrow 80/90 tire, a radical pullback drag-style bar, forward-mounted footpegs instead of floorboards, a teardrop fuel tank, slash-cut black-out mufflers, a chunkier seat, and unique detailing.

Likes: Three distinct choices of Kawasaki V-twin power, all at the right price

Dislikes: In production for 13 years now, the Vulcan 900 is getting long in the tooth

Verdict: Solid name, proven product
