Big Chief Custom Unveiled at NY Show

Indian Reveals Custom Chief At IMS

Built around the Indian Chief Classic and designed by the Polaris Industries Industrial Design team, the “Big Chief Custom” machine was unveiled at the Indian Motorcycle display inside the International Motorcycle Show at the Javits Center in New York City. The “Big Chief ” is the first custom Indian created around the 2014 models introduced earlier this year at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Led by Polaris Industries’ Industrial Design chief Greg Brew, a dedicated crew threw themselves into fully dressing up a stock 2014 Indian Chief Classic. The resulting bike is packed with an array of Genuine Indian Motorcycle aftermarket accessories and topped off with a custom paint scheme and billet girder front fork.

That aluminum girder front end -- designed, machined and built in-house -- references early Indian models, though this particular unit features fully machined uprights and sand-blasted billet cross members with a custom 23-inch front wheel. Because of that hefty wheel size, a custom fender needed to be crafted, and the resulting valanced piece maintains the classic look of the Chief. A custom shock and headlight add visual pizzaz to the the front end. The multi-hued custom paint comes courtesy of in-house by team member Steve Leszinski. Another nod to Indians past is the springer style seat, though this one is updated with a cantilevered design.

You'll also find the “Pinnacle Series” of Indian Motorcycle accessories in full display on the Big Chief Custom. Individual pieces include the Cam Cover, Primary Cover, Chrome Grips and Beach Bars, and the Stage 1 exhaust sports Fish Tail Tips. Other custom accessories include War Bonnet Floorboard Pads, a Heel Shifter and chrome Rear Fender Bumper.

There's no doubt this new Chief custom will give owners of new Indian models some ideas on how to personalize their new bikes.

The “Big Chief Custom” will be displayed in the Indian Motorcycle exhibit as part of the 2014 International Motorcycle Shows tour, which still has stops in Michigan; Washington, DC; Minneapolis; Cleveland; Chicago; and Seattle. The Display features the full 2014 line of Indian Chief motorcycles as well as the Spirit of Munro custom tribute, and a display of vintage Indian motorcycles that will change from show to show.
