The Newest CVO Is a Looker

Harley-Davidson 2014 CVO Softail Deluxe

New CVO Softail Brings Classic Looks and Performance Plus ABS, GPS, and Detachable Bags and Rack

You may not have noticed that, along with the new Touring bike/Project Rushmore releases last week from Harley, there were a couple of CVO additions for 2014 as well. The new kid in the Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) group is the Softail Deluxe, which combines the clean lines of a Softail chassis and a distinctive Art Deco paint scheme with the higher-performance Screamin Eagle 110 engine, and adds tour-ready tech to boot. Naturally, the newest CVO is drenched in dazzling chrome, to better reflect its upper-shelf status as a limited-production motorcycle.

Harley CVO Softail Deluxe in red The Softail Deluxe has always traded on its heavy retro vibe, and you'll get more of the same with the CVO version, which aims to project both performance and timeless styling, according to Harley-Davidson Styling Manager Kirk Rasmussen.

"The CVO Softail Deluxe is a fast classic," says Rasmussen. "Influenced by the Art Deco tradition of streamlining, we use many long, low lines on this bike. The luggage rack, the low-profile chrome console, the eyebrows on the headlight and spots, the medallions on the tank and saddle bags and even the Slipstream Collection accessories, work together to lengthen this bike's profile. The Airflow paint scheme is a classic design from the pre-war era."

Its low center of gravity and compact rider triangle makes the CVO Softail Deluxe a good option for smaller riders too; seat height is just 25.8 inches off the deck, and the embossed-leather, hand-stitched seat is narrower at the nose for an easier reach to the ground. A low-rise handlebar and pull-back risers create a shorter reach to the hand controls. Finally, the new smaller-diameter Slipstream Collection controls are said to offer a better fit for smaller hands.

Convertible components make it easy to transform the CVO Softail Deluxe. The quick-detach windshield can be popped off (along with the integrated Road Tech zumo 660 GPS Navigator), as can the leather-covered saddlebags and detachable backrest and luggage rack. Viola, a boulevard cruiser. For a solo look, the passenger pillion can be removed, exposing more of that spectacular CVO paint on the rear fender. Motivating this beauty is the Screamin' Eagle Twin Cam 110B™ engine, a 110-cid V-Twin pumping out 108 ft. lbs. of torque. The Softail chassis tucks a pair of coil-over shock absorbers mounted horizontally and out of sight within the frame rails for suspension control. The new Daymaker LED headlamp and fog lamps make it into this model as well, for superior nighttime illumination. Electronic cruise control, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), keyless ignition, and the Harley-Davidson Smart Security System are standard equipment on the CVO Softail Deluxe. MSRP is $28,999.

The engine is equipped with a high-performance Ventilator air cleaner, Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), Automatic Compression Release, and Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), and is mated to a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission. Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) helps the rider maintain control during braking events, especially those that happen in less-than-optimal conditions. Front and rear brake lines are braided stainless steel.

A Daymaker LED headlight and Daymaker LED fog lamps deliver bright, white light in a pattern that is highly focused. The Daymaker headlamp has two D-shaped lenses: one that focuses light into a pool directly in front of the bike for outstanding low-beam illumination, and another separate high-beam projector that delivers a super-bright, focused beam to penetrate deep into the night.
