Harley-Davidson Unveils 2010 CVO Models

Lineup Features Four machines, two of them new

FLSTSE CVO Softail Convertible
FXDFSE CVO Fat Boy
FLHXSE CVO Street Glide
FLHTCUSE CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide

If you're familiar with the CVO line, you know that Harley Davidson's Custom Vehicle Operations unit, now in its 11th year, aims to design and build limited production factory customs for customers predisposed to brilliant chrome, top-shelf paint and big power.

For 2010, the CVO crew has once again come up with four unique models that build upon this mission statement. There are two all-new CVO models for 2010. First up is the CVO Street Glide, and making the cut again for 2010 are the CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide and the CVO Fat Bob.

But everybody knows there's one model chosen to raise eyebrows in the crowd: this year it's the FLSTSE CVO Convertible. The all-new model is based on the Softail platform, and reintroduces the concept of a versatile machine capable of adapting to a rider's preferred style just by swapping a few components.

Powering the entire 2010 CVO line is Screamin' Eagle's Twin Cam 110 power plant. The biggest Big Twin engine is again joined to the six-speed Cruise Drive tranny, and Harley's proprietary security system comes standard on CVOs as well. All touring CVOs also get ABS and electronic cruise control as standard features.

FLSTSE CVO Softail Convertible: New Kid in Town
As we mentioned, the Big Cheese for this year's CVO line is the Convertible. This Softail-based cruiser rekindles a simple yet universally appealing idea -- a "two-into-one" bike configurable for different riding situations. Set up the Convertible for all-day touring, two-up cruising or solo profiling simply by adding or detaching a few key components. The compact fairing with smoked shield, leather saddlebags, passenger pillion and upright with backrest pad can all be popped on or off easily, in minutes - without tools. A new full-coverage rear fender, a five-inch digital speedometer with analog tachometer over a new two-piece console, Stinger Chrome aluminum wheels and a Ventilator high-flow engine air intake all make their debut on the CVO Convertible.

The wide rear fender curves over a 200-series rear radial (the widest in this bunch) while also serving as a mount for a new rear light bar with integrated stop/turn/taillights. The FLSTSE's heavy-lidded front fender is tucked between thickly-shrouded 41.3mm fork legs, and the 110B Granite powder coated powertrain gets identifying etchings on the covers and cylinder heads.

Down below lies Harley's evergreen Softail platform, featuring a rear suspension design that apes the clean lines of a vintage hardtail frame, but with the benefits of a modern suspension hidden beneath the chassis. Due to a lowered rear suspension, the Convertible's seat height is a subterranean 24.4 inches - one of the lowest out there. The two-piece seat means passengers get a wide pillion pad to rest on as well.

The Convertible's hydraulic clutch makes for a smooth pull at the lever, and with the 6 speed Cruise Drive transmission (with new helical-cut fifth gear) offering amply spaced ratios, it's bound to be an easy-to-ride machine.

The Softail Convertible gets custom paint that's available in three color schemes, with color-matched frame, swingarm, frame inserts, oil tank and saddlebag supports. Rumble Collection grips, footboards, passenger and shifter pegs, brake pedal pad and mirrors round out the long list top-shelf touches. A high torque 1.4kW starter, Harley Davidson Smart Security System with siren, indoor storage cover and commemorative CVO ignition key are also included with purchase.

Production will be limited to 2,500 units.

FXDFSE CVO Fat Bob: Chubby Redux
Wide and maybe just a little weird (we're talking about the front headlights), the 2010 CVO Fat Bob makes a return to its more subtle roots with a new finish called Midnight Pearl. This new plating process appears on the dual headlamp shell, Tri-Br LED tail light cover, timer and derby covers, horn cover and fender strut covers.

A two piece chrome and Midnight Pearl console tops the fuel tank, but perhaps bigger news this year is a brown distressed leather seat available in a two-piece convertible configuration that can be swapped to a solo setup. When you see it on a model with the Satin Pewter color scheme, you'll want to call it "The Eddie Bauer Bike" too. Trust us.

Luckily, Bob also gets a powder-coated Granite finish on the 110 cu in. powertrain to keep things sufficiently menacing. New chrome and rubber rear fender protectors, Diamond Black backfaces on the speedo and tach and Profile mirrors with a solid stem are just some of the other unique details arrayed on the Fat Bob. Diamond Black Collection footpegs, shifter peg, brake pedal and grips further emphasize the upmarket status here. Other CVO touches include internal wiring on the 1.25 inch handlebar and the return of the powder coated Fang wheels as well as the Heavy Breather Air Intake. A high torque 1.4kW starter, high performance hydraulic clutch, Harley Davidson Smart Security System with siren, storage cover and commemorative CVO ignition key are other included goodies. And of course, there's the ultra-cool signature Tommy Gun 2-into-1-into-2 exhaust with chrome blunt cut mufflers and black header pipe.

The CVO Fat Bob is also available in three new color combinations with a color-matched chin spoiler, electrical box cover, battery cover, coil cover and custom color frame and swingarm.

Production will be limited to approximately 1,300 units.

FLHXSE CVO Street Glide: Takin it to the Street
Making its first appearance in the CVO crew for 2010 is the Street Glide. This limited production version of Harley's hot-rod bagger gets motivated by the same Twin Cam 110 found on the others, rubber-mounted to the frame with a 6 speed Cruise Drive tranny taking it to the wheel.

The Glide is instantly recognizable by its low profile and fork-mounted Batwing" fairing with a smoked low profile wind deflector and solo headlamp. The slammed and trimmed front fender and hard saddlebags with passenger backrest rather than a trunk are other identifiers.

You'll also find new, black 18-inch Agitator wheels with a seven spoke design and contrast chrome highlights on the CVO Street Glide. Floating front brake rotors match the wheels and a trimmed front fender/bracket assembly ensures that wheel gets seen. Practical concerns have been addressed too: the Glide gets new one-piece, injection molded extended saddlebags, which are full-depth and offer increased capacity. The color-matched latches are standard, and a new color-matched rear fascia panel fills in the space between each saddlebag and the rear fender, with new LED stop/turn/taillights built-in for a super-clean appearance.

New hydraulic rear shocks with 40mm pistons and 14mm rods are said to offer optimized rebound and damping, and preload can be adjusted by hand via a convenient knob just behind the left saddlebag. A custom, low profile seat and matching backrest pad also emphasize the sleek silhouette and come with leather inserts and French stitching. Smoked turn signal lenses, carry-out saddlebag liners, a high performance clutch, standard ABS brakes, electronic cruise control, an HD factory security system and a 40 watt Harmon Kardon Advanced Audio system round out the long list of premium amenities found on this CVO machine.

Production of the 2010 CVO Street Glide will be limited to approximately 3500 units.

FLHTCUSE CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide: Long time Fave
The Ultra Classic Electra Glide is a returning CVO favorite as well, enjoying the longest continuous CVO run of any bike; this is its 5th appearance in the line.

Harley calls it the premier grand American Touring vehicle, and it certainly has the popularity and reputation to compete for the claim. The 2010 CVO version receives updates for '10 as well, mainly is the lighting arena. A combination of upgraded rear lighting and new LED taillight components now allow the bike to meet international standards, so it can now be shipped overseas. And because LEDs don't require bulb housings, the Ultra's luggage now claims increased capacity (especially inside the Tour Pak).

Other road-ready refinements include a new passenger backrest with adjustable lumbar support (and an interior up/down adjustment), as well as a new Tour Pak 112 volt outlet along with a color matched LED King Tour Pak Brake/tail lamp. A series of brilliant LED light pods are also positioned inside to cast light on the saddlebag and Tour Pak interiors, and the luggage now offers carry-out liners and a power lock system.

The 17-inch front wheel and 16 rear receive stylish Roulette rims. For entertainment, you get an impressive sound system by sound system by Harmon Kardon; an 80-watt setup with CB/intercom and navigation system options. There's also an integrated garage door opener and receiver.

Other CVO tidbits include carry-out luggage liners for the saddlebags and Tour Pak, a dual control heated leather seat, teardrop floating front brake rotors, custom oil cooler with chrome cover and CVO medallion, ABS, Air Wing Tour-Pak rack, braided stainless steel brake and clutch lines, HD Security System, high performance clutch and, yes, the commemorative CVO ignition key.

Production will be limited to approximately 3.450 units.
