Many motorcyclists traveling between Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, California along U.S. 101 think they're getting off the beaten path by taking a shortcut across Route 154 (a designated scenic route). But once on Route 154, you can follow an even less-beaten path, with a great watering hole to boot. As you reach the crest of 154 coming from Santa Barbara, turn left off of U.S. Highway 154 and pick up Stagecoach Road. Ride a few miles west on the tightly twisting back road, and you will find Cold Springs Tavern.

You’ll probably have park along the road. The current owners, Joy Ovington Wilson and her husband Wayne currently run the Tavern and were preceded by Audrey Ovington, who had purchased the Tavern in 1941 though the property has been in her family since the early 1900s. Cold Springs is actually two places: a bar, and in a separate building, a cozy, romantic restaurant. Enjoy live music on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons during the summer. During the spring and summer, the bands play outside. And if you feel like staying a while, Lake Cachuma and its campground are only 8 miles away. Other places to visit in the area include the Danish town, Solvang (18 miles away), and Mattie’s Tavern (the next stop on the stagecoach route, 21 miles away).
