Beyond the Bolt

Star Bolt Custom

When Low and Mean got a brand new Star Bolt three months ago (as part of a Bolt build competition -- more on that later), designer Chris Hagest says he was stoked. "We had all kinds of ideas for this bike, but we knew we wanted to change out suspension, bodywork, new exhaust and much more."

To say they accomplished all that is a bit of an understatement. Just look at the thing. Leading the way on this edgy interpretation of Star's minimalist bobber is a girder front end by VTXtreme. Also check out the custom fenders from Low and Mean, and yep, an upgraded Platinum Air suspension. Can't miss the sleek chin scoop either, or the custom exhaust and super low-profile seat, all by Low and Mean.

Topped off by a subtle coat of black paint, the result is the Copper Bolt -- a fully custom, redesigned modern day bobber, rather than a piggyback build that's stuck in the past.

With those super fat Avon Cobra tires and slammed suspension, the thing looks completely unrideable right? That's what I thought too -- til Chris showed me how to jack up the air ride suspension, and off I went for a quick spin around the block. Sure, it's a bit heavy to steer at first, but once you get the hang of it, there's not much too worry about (although you'll still touch down quite a bit on sharper turns, even with the suspension set all the way on high).

But all eyes will be on you as you ride by -- and isn't that the point of a bike like this?

As Chris also reminded us, "everything on all our custom bikes, including this Bolt, can be purchased and installed by the customer for his own bike."

Nice to know they're not just show queens, eh?
