How does the Ducati Panigale V4 R improve upon the already impressive V4 or even the electronically suspended V4 S? R-spec engine parts include a polished crankshaft and titanium connecting rods, plus two-ring forged short-skirt pistons, titanium intake valves, higher-lift camshafts, a larger oval-section throttle body, and a shorter-length base stack on the two-stage variable-height velocity stacks that breathe through a race-kit air filter. A racing dry clutch (its traditional clatter damped by a cover), an Öhlins NPX 25/30 fork, a TTX 36 shock, and a manually adjustable steering damper are also standard. Even the drive chain has been downsized from #525 to #520 to save weight from both the chain and sprocket.

Ducati says the Panigale V4 R is fitted with the most powerful production engine the Bologna-based company has ever offered. While US noise regulations hold the North American R-model to a claimed 209 hp at 13,250 rpm, many owners will surely fit the bike for track use with the accessory Akrapovic titanium racing exhaust and related engine map, the combination of which is said to deliver a whopping 234 hp at 15,500 rpm.

Likes: Mega engine, telepathic chassis, stunning looks… What's not to like?!

Dislikes: Low production/high price guarantee few people will ever ride one

Verdict: Superbike aspirations? Put your money on a Ducati Panigale V4 R.

Believe the hype: Veteran CW staffer Don Canet tested the Ducati Panigale V4 R at Circuito de Jerez in southern Spain. “The Panigale V4 R is without question the most confidence-bolstering Ducati I have ever ridden,” he wrote. “The bike could do no wrong ridden at my chosen testing pace.”

Kawasaki responded to Ducati’s announcement of the V4 R, breathing new life into the ZX-10RR to recover all-important acceleration lost through recent World Superbike rules changes; MSRP is up $6K. BMW has also upped the ante with a new-from-the-ground-up S1000RR producing a claimed 205 hp with 84 pound-feet of torque.
