F.A.S.T.Ride Motorcycle Event in Chicago's Western Suburbs to Fight Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

150-mile Charity Ride Set for Sunday, August 21

CHICAGO - June 14, 2011 -- Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) costs the state of Illinois nearly $400 million every year. The total cost of dealing with FASD disorders across the country comes to more than $6 billion. The frustrating thing about the disorder is that out of all the potential birth disorders, it is the most preventable. Drinking alcohol while pregnant can cause FASD and it affects more children than disorders like Spina Bifida, Down Syndrome and Muscular Dystrophy combined. Education and funding is required to spread the word about alcohol and pregnancy and to help those with FASD children.

The Chicago-area FASTeam and motorcycle enthusiasts from around the state are riding to raise awareness with the 2011 F.A.S.T.Ride.

Where: Galway's Bar & Grill
12045 W. Roosevelt Road
Elmhurst, IL
The ride is 150-miles through the western suburbs

When: Sunday August 21
Registration is at 8:00 AM
Ride starts at 9:30 AM

The ride features police-stopped intersections for non-stop riding enjoyment, plus a light lunch at the Moose Lodge in Morris, Illinois. Riders and non-riders gather back at Galway's Bar & Grill at 3:00 PM for a post-ride party featuring a dinner buffet, a live band and raffles with the chance to win a number of cash prizes, including a Split the Pot Grand Prize, two $500 second place winners and 10 $100 third place cash winners.

"We continue to make great strides in increasing the awareness of FASD, especially here in Illinois," said Walt Teichen, chairman of the FASTeam board of directors and co-founder the organization with his wife Kathy. "I know firsthand the effects that FASD can have on a family. I also know that we are still a long way from where we need to be. Events like the FASTRide help get the word out . The ride continues to grow and that really shows that our message is reaching people."
