OK, so technically it was established to encourage commuting via two wheels, and motorcycle and scooter groups and organizations actively encourage riders to commute by cycle on this day, but you get the drift. Think of as a chance to spice up your daily commute, and in the process, save a little gas. The first Ride to Work Day took place in 1992. It was inspired by the "Work to Ride - Ride to Work" program created in the late 1980s by Andy Goldfine, the founder of Aerostich/RiderWearHouse, (a manufacturer of riders gear and accessories). Eventually several moto-businesses informally advocated every third Wednesday in July as Ride To Work Day, and in 2000, a non-profit organization was formed to promote the event throughout the motorcycling community. Today, Ride to Work Day has evolved into an international grassroots movement, and many cities, including Cincinnati, Milwaukee and San Diego have officially proclaimed July 16 as Ride to Work Day. The non-profit Ride To Work advocacy organization promotes using more motorcycles and scooters in the daily commute because their positive effects on traffic flow and urban parking. In addition, studies have shown that motorcycles and scooters consume fewer resources per mile and motorcyclists reach their destinations faster than car drivers.

Participation in the yearly event is estimated to triple the number of riders on the road. By agreeing to purchase Italian motorcycle maker MV Agusta, the Motor Company is now officially entrenched in the European market. Sure we had heard rumors for years, but most of them were generally about Harley buying Ducati, so we took it with a grain of salt.

In fact, the scuttlebutt just this past April was that Indian industrial behemoth the Tata Group (which, you might recall, bought Land Rover and Jaguar from Ford not too long ago), was looking at getting a majority stake in MV Agusta. According to reports on some business blogs, Chairman Ratan Tata was in talks with Claudio Castiglioni about gaining some shares in the financially beleaguered MV group.

With dismal sales and depleted finances, the Italian company hasn't been able to develop new motorcycles over the last few years, and even had to pull out of plans to race in WSBK. But now, with this bombshell from Harley, the premium Italian marque may just come out smelling like a rose. There are some anxious folks out there, however, who fear Milwaukee may want to meddle with some of MV's nuts and bolts, so we'll just kick back and see what happens. The official press release follows:

HARLEY-DAVIDSON TO ACQUIRE MV AGUSTA GROUP
EXPANDING PRESENCE IN EUROPE
Italian Company Known for Premium, High-Performance Motorcycles

Milwaukee, Wis., July 11,
2008 -- Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) today announced the signing of a definitive agreement to purchase the Italian motorcycle maker MV Agusta Group (MVAG). Under the agreement, Harley-Davidson will acquire 100 percent of MV Agusta Group shares for total consideration of approximately 70 million euros ($109 million), which includes the satisfaction of existing bank debt for approximately 45 million euros ($70 million). In addition, the agreement provides for a contingent payment to Claudio Castiglioni in 2016, if certain financial targets are met. MV Agusta Group is privately held, with the Castiglioni family owning 95 percent of MVAG shares.
The acquisition is expected to close in several weeks, pending the satisfaction of contingencies and receipt of regulatory approvals. Harley-Davidson intends to fund the transaction primarily through euro-denominated debt.
MV Agusta Group has two families of motorcycles: a line of exclusive, premium, high-performance sport motorcycles sold under the MV Agusta brand; and a line of lightweight motorcycles sold under the Cagiva brand. MV Agusta's F4-R motorcycle, powered by a 1078cc in-line four-cylinder liquid cooled engine, is rated at 190 hp. The company sells its products through about 500 dealers worldwide, the vast majority of them in Europe. In 2007, MVAG shipped 5,819 motorcycles. During 2008 MVAG has significantly slowed production due to financial difficulties.
"Motorcycles are the heart, soul and passion of Harley-Davidson, Buell and MV Agusta," said Harley-Davidson, Inc. Chief Executive Officer Jim Ziemer. "Both have great products and close connections with incredibly devoted customers. The MV Agusta and Cagiva brands are well-known and highly regarded in Europe. They are synonymous with beautiful, premium, Italian
performance motorcycles," Ziemer said. Harley-Davidson, Inc. plans to continue to operate MV Agusta Group from its headquarters based in Varese, Italy. Following closing, the first priority will be to appoint a leadership team to include a new Managing Director and to resume the manufacture of current models.
Current MV Agusta Group Chairman Claudio Castiglioni will continue in a leadership role as Chairman and will play a major role in future product development. Design Chief Massimo Tamburini will continue his leadership of MV Agusta Group's world leading sport-bike design studio.
"We take enormous pride in MV Agusta and Cagiva motorcycles," said Castiglioni. "Our riders seek an uncompromising experience in premium performance motorcycles. And with Harley-Davidson's deep understanding of the emotional as well as the business side of motorcycling, I have great confidence that our motorcycles will excite customers for generations to come."
According to Ziemer, the acquisition is intended primarily to expand Harley-Davidson, Inc's presence and footprint in Europe, complementing the Harley-Davidson and Buell motorcycle families. Retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles have grown at a double-digit rate in Europe in each of the last three years, as the Company has increased its strategic focus on global markets.
"The acquisition of MV Agusta Group will enhance Harley-Davidson, Inc's position as a global leader in fulfilling customer dreams and providing extraordinary customer experiences. We look forward to a long relationship with the MV Agusta and Cagiva families of customers and employees," said Ziemer.

Conference Call
Harley-Davidson, Inc. will hold a webcast conference call regarding the acquisition from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. (central time) today, July 11, with Tom Bergmann, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Harley-Davidson, Inc. To access the webcast, please log on and register at least ten minutes prior to the start time at www.harley-davidson.com, under the Investor Relations section. A replay of the webcast will be available at the same location approximately two hours after the call concludes.

Company Background
Harley-Davidson, Inc. is the parent company for the group of companies doing business as Harley-Davidson Motor Company (HDMC), Buell Motorcycle Company (Buell) and Harley-Davidson Financial Services (HDFS). Harley-Davidson Motor Company produces heavyweight motorcycles and offers a line of motorcycle parts, accessories, general merchandise and related services. HDMC manufactures five families of motorcycles: Touring, Dyna, Softail, Sportster and VRSCTM. Buell produces premium sport performance motorcycles and offers a line of motorcycle parts, accessories, and apparel. HDFS provides wholesale and retail financing and insurance programs primarily to Harley-Davidson and Buell dealers and customers.

Forward-Looking Statements
Harley-Davidson, Inc. intends that certain matters discussed in this release are "forward-looking statements" intended to qualify for the safe harbor from liability established by the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. These forward-looking statements can generally be identified as such because the context of the statement will include words such as Harley "believes," "anticipates," "expects," "plans," or "estimates" or words of similar meaning. Similarly, statements that describe future plans, objectives, outlooks, targets, guidance or goals are also forward-looking statements. Certain risks and uncertainties are described below. Shareholders, potential investors, and other readers are urged to consider these factors in evaluating the forward-looking statements and cautioned not to place undue reliance on such forward-looking statements. The forward-looking statements included in this release are only made as of the date of this release, and Harley-Davidson, Inc. disclaims any obligation to publicly update such forward-looking statements to reflect subsequent events or circumstances.

Although Harley-Davidson and MV Agusta Group have signed a definitive purchase agreement, there is no assurance that all of the contingencies will be satisfied or that the governmental approvals will be obtained in a timely manner or at all. The proposed acquisition may not occur if the conditions to completing the transaction are not satisfied in a timely manner.

In addition, Harley-Davidson intends to finance a portion of the consideration by borrowing funds and its level of indebtedness may increase as a result, which may cause Harley-Davidson to incur additional interest expense and limit Harley-Davidson's ability to obtain additional financing. It could also increase Harley-Davidson's exposure to general adverse economic and industry conditions and adversely impact Harley-Davidson, Inc.'s earnings per share. Furthermore, Harley-Davidson may have challenges successfully integrating or profitably operating the business of MV Agusta Group.

Photo Gallery: Harley-Davidson To Acquire MV Agusta Group Expanding Presence In Europe - Motorcycle Cruiser Magazine Online

Both the VStar 1100 Custom and the 650cc VStar Custom receive a blacked-out engine and wheel treatments for 2009, but the rest of the bikes mentioned in the release only get new colors. We suspect there will much more extensive '09 model news in the second release announcement coming at summer's end.

The Yamaha/Star official release follows:

Yamaha Announces New 2009 Motorcycle and Scooter Models

Cypress, Calif. - Yamaha Motor Corporation is pleased to introduce select, new 2009 motorcycle and scooter models that give today's enthusiasts exactly what they are looking for.

With its recent announcement of the new VMAX, Star motorcycles is also pleased to announce the return of several key 2009 models. They include the V Star 1100 Silverado, Classic and Custom, the V Star Silverado, Classic and Custom and the V Star 250. In addition to new colors for the Silverado and Classic, both of the Custom models feature blacked out engines and new blacked out wheels to further enhance the custom look.

Also returning for 2009 is the ever popular YZF-R6S in two colors as well as the recently re-designed XT 250 and versatile TW 200 dual purpose machines.

With rising gas prices in the news every day, scooters are becoming a very attractive commuting alternative. With two brand new models plus our five existing models Yamaha has all the right choices. First, there's the new-generation Zuma 125, powered by a 125cc, 4-valve four stroke, fuel injected engine. Yamaha is now advertising mpg for our scooters, and the Zuma 125 achieves fuel economy up to an estimated 88* mpg with a fuel tank that holds 1.5 gallons of gas.

Commuters wanting even more can have it - a lot more. That's because Yamaha is also introducing the all-new TMAX. Think of it as a Super Sport Scooter with its 499cc fuel-injected twin cylinder engine, a lightweight CF die-cast aluminum frame, 4-piston mono-block caliper dual front disc brakes and a rear disc brake. TMAX also has luxury scooter appointments like plenty of storage, an operator backrest, full instrumentation and achieves fuel economy up to an estimated 47* mpg. The 400cc Majesty, Vino 125, Vino Classic, C3 and the ever popular Zuma 50 all return with great new colors for 2009.

These models represent our early release 2009 models and we will have additional 2009 model news at the end of the summer.

Full information on all Star models can be found at http://www.starmotorcycles.com.

Photo Gallery: 2009: The New Bikes Are Coming - Motorcycle Cruiser Online Magazine

Midway. The long-anticipated motorcycle emerged from behind a screen, engine wailing and the rider performing a smoky burnout.

The '09 VMax is an entirely new motorcycle from the ground up. The bullseye of the bike remains the massive V-4 engine (a stressed member of the chassis), amusingly described by Star as "compact." Now arrayed at a 65-degree 'vee' and displacing 1679cc, the liquid cooled powerplant sports 4-valves per cylinder a hybrid chain and gear cam drive and pumps out a claimed 197.4 horsepower (at the crankshaft) with 123 lb-ft of torque. Taking technology directly from the Yamaha YZF-R1 sportbike, Max has fly-by-wire throttle control ("Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle") and variable intake tract length ("Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake") by way of a servomotor that moves the intake funnels for better acceleration at all speeds. Max now has EFI and a hydraulic slipper clutch to make downshifting smoother. Air enters through the can't-miss-'em aluminum intakes and exits through a four-into-one-into-two-into-four exhaust system with twinned pairs of mufflers on each side. The exhaust also has EXUP (Exhaust Ultimate Power valve), a proven Yamaha technology that helps keep the powerband smooth at all rpms. Because the EPA is always watching, there are catalytic converters stuffed up into the cans as well.

The chassis is now a twin-spar aluminum frame and swingarm for weight savings, and consists of cast, die-cast and extruded sections. The bike still has that secret underseat fuel tank, which now holds a whopping 4.0 gallons. Beefy titanium-oxide coated 52mm forks hold up the front end with a remote reservoir, single shock in the back. The suspension, front and rear, is fully adjustable for rebound and compression damping, and spring preload, with a remote preload adjuster on the shock (so adjusting for a passenger doesn't require tools or getting dirty). The front brakes are a far cry from the primitive binders of '85, now featuring a linear controlled three position ABS system with Brembo radial master cylinders, 320mm wave-type rotors and 6-piston calipers. The rear also sports a Brembo master cylinder, 298mm wave-type rotor and single-piston caliper. The gauges are also very trick. First, mounted in the center of the handlebars, is a digital speedometer, LED indicators and analog tach with an LED shift light, just like on a dragracer. Atop the tank lives an "Organic Electro Luminescence" display that can show a clock, fuel meter, trip meter, gear position, coolant temperature and more. It's designed to be simpler, brighter and much easier to read than LCDs and comes with a countdown clock and a stopwatch too - presumably so you can time those stoplight to stoplight drags/sprints.

Weight has climbed to 683 lbs. for the new VMax and the price is now $17,990. However, with a limited production - only 2500 units are coming to the U.S.- starting in November- ownership will be an excusive club. Consumer confidence is flagging, the market's tanking and motorcycle sales just aren't what they used to be - to put it mildly. But then, Stephen Julius isn't most of us. Julius, the chairman of Indian Motorcycle - the newest version of it - has said in the past that "I want to build the Bentley of motorcycles. "We've tried to understand what the Indian means to the consumer and translate that in a physical product."

We'll have a chance to see how close he came this summer, when the latest incarnation of the Indian Chief is revealed to an impatient public. Meanwhile, the new Indian, now based in Kings Mountain, N.C., has released more details and rough specifications on the models it will soon be launching - including the aforementioned Chief, in four spec versions - though the launch date itself has yet to be revealed.

When London-based Stellican Limited bought the trademarks and related intellectual property of America's oldest and most iconic motorcycle brand in July 2004, it had said it was expecting to have new product out by 2007. Five years on we're still waiting, though it looks like we're pretty close to the pot of gold.

The very first Indian motorcycle hit the street in 1901, and today any early Indian would be part of a dream garage. The original iconic manufacturer went out of business in 1953, and the next generation of machines was jumpstarted by California Motorcycle Co. in 1999, after it purchased the Indian trademark. The "Gilroy Indians", as they were called (the company was headquartered in Gilroy, California), were based mostly around newer versions of the Chief but featured off-the-shelf S&S engines, which never really appealed to purists. The company hit the skids in late 2003 after the completion of an all-new engine design, the 100ci PowerPlus. By then the money had run out, and it was too little too late.

This time around, Indian is shooting for a production number of 750 bikes a year and privately held Stellican is playing with their own money (which they have plenty of). Buyers will likely be enthusiasts who are buying an Indian as their second bike or because they want a heritage brand.

Julius also says the new bike may well reflect the lines of the traditional Chief, but "In terms of the engineering, it will be a radically different bike from the bike that was produced through 2003."

Not to worry - there are plenty of Indian loyalists out there watching to make sure it's a worthy successor.

The official release follows:

News Brief: 2009 Indian Chief Motorcycle
Kings Mountain, NC-The long-anticipated introduction of the all-new 2009 Indian Chief motorcycle is approaching. As the launch date draws near (although it is yet to be announced), more details about the renaissance of this iconic American motorcycle brand are being revealed. This much is clear: the new Indian Motorcycle Company is taking a wholly different and measured approach to engineering, development and marketing of the new Indian Chief.

Founded in 1901, the legendary Indian brand remains America's first motorcycle and is highly revered. Chairman Stephen Julius and President Steve Heese have orchestrated the re-launch of Indian. Under General Manager Chris Bernauer, an eleven-year veteran of Harley-Davidson, the Indian Motorcycle team has maintained a sharp focus on product development, design and engineering excellence.

"We're very excited about the new Indian Chief which are, in every way, both true to the legacy of the Indian brand and representative of the highest level of engineering expertise" according to Mr. Bernauer. "Indian aficionados everywhere will be pleased with these superior motorcycles which effectively blend timeless Indian design with contemporary motorcycle performance."

For the past few years, Indian Motorcycle's engineering staff, led by VP of Engineering Nick Glaja, have logged thousands of hours developing, evaluating and refining each and every engineering detail. Rigorous testing continues until each component has proven its durability and performance. There will be no rush to market. Mr. Glaja, also a motorcycling industry veteran, was Principal Engineer of Powertrain Technology at Harley-Davidson before joining Indian.

Mr. Glaja says "Our goal was quite simple: to focus on the premium nature of this brand and build the finest Indian motorcycle ever. We took a 'clean sheet' approach to the engineering of this world class American legend to ensure a solid engineering platform. Benchmarks were set high and we believe our customers will be very happy."

At the heart of the process has been an unrelenting emphasis on quality and craftsmanship. No details have been overlooked or considered too minor to be discussed and evaluated. The final assembly of each Indian Chief takes place at Kings Mountain by a team of technicians known for the passionate pursuit of their craft.

An overriding sense of reverence pervades Indian headquarters. There is an enormous sense of pride in being a part of the rebirth of Indian Motorcycle and that feeling translates into an attention to detail and genuine care for each and every component. Assembly is both loving and methodical, with obvious care taken to produce the finest Indian motorcycles the world has ever seen.

The new Indian Chief motorcycles are rightfully positioned as premium products and will be produced in limited numbers, with the focus on outstanding quality, performance and exclusivity. Limited production will ensure the highest level of quality is maintained and owners will be certain to enjoy the enduring value of an extraordinary new Indian Chief as well as true appreciation of ownership exclusivity.

The new Indian motorcycles are designed and engineered to be powerful works of art. The 2009 Indian Chief features a redesigned 105 cubic inch PowerPlus V-Twin powertrain with electronic closed loop sequential port fuel injection. A new charging system provides increased capacity for the EFI.

Engine cylinders are Nikasil plated, eliminating the need for cast-iron liners. A new crankshaft eliminates "scissoring". The exhaust system is a new design with integrated 3-way catalytic converter and heated oxygen sensors. All body parts are e-coated and the frame and swingarm are e-coated and powder coated for enhanced corrosion protection.

A six-speed transmission delivers power through the belt drive to 16-inch wheels out back. Stopping is achieved via Brembo 4-piston calipers, with 11.5" dual rotors up front. Standard 5.5-gallon tank helps extend cruising range. Seats are all-leather and built to exacting specifications. But specs don't even begin to tell the story of what it's like to ride an Indian. It's simply awe-inspiring.

For 2009, Indian will offer four Chief models: Chief Standard, Chief Deluxe, Chief Roadmaster and Chief Vintage. As befits these limited-edition masterworks, base prices will range from $30,999 for the Standard to $31,999 for the Deluxe and $33,999 for the Roadmaster to $35,499 for the Chief Vintage. Primary differences between models are in levels of trim, seating configurations, fender design, paint combinations, and included accessories. (Individual spec sheets and images are included separately in this kit.)

The exciting reality for all motorcycle enthusiasts is that the 2009 Indian Chiefs are so much more than the sum of their parts. Each model is an integrated whole, the result of superior engineering and a reflection of achievement well beyond incremental improvement. The 2009 Indian Chiefs are all-new and a dramatic extension of the Indian Motorcycle legacy, certain to take their place in motorcycle history.

Given the ultra premium nature of the Indian Motorcycle brand, Indian will be very selective in judging the quality and number of dealers. By the end of 2008, it is expected that no more than thirty dealerships will be in place-primarily in top motorcycle markets. A new stand-alone dealership design of 10,000 square foot will be the flagship in major markets, although it is likely that these new structures will not be completed until sometime in 2009.

At present, Indian dealers are already staged for opening for Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Denver, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles, with an additional twelve applications being processed. It should also be mentioned that the emotional appeal, value and power of the Indian brand will soon result in the launch and merchandising of the highest quality line of motorcycle apparel and accessories in the industry. Indian Motorcycle Apparel will launch the line this summer. Items will be available for purchase through dealerships, online at http://www.indianmotorcycle.com and at specialty retail stores.

In subsequent years, Indian plans to expand its dealer network to additional markets. Superior engineering, quality and performance, the incredible history and present-day cache of the Indian brand, the exclusivity factor, an obsession with customer satisfaction and a commitment to long term slow-growth and success are expected to serve Indian Motorcycle Company well into the future.

2009 Chief Standard
Note: All specification subject to change

FEATURES
STYLING
. The R2R event has collected thousands of dollars in fees, sponsorships and donations over the years. The all-volunteer effort donates 100% of what it collects.

Event founder Jerome Eberharter says the 2008 ride will attract more motorcyclists than ever because the 100-mile route along a national scenic byway is a riding favorite. This year's goal is to raise $20,000. All makes, models of motorcycles and scooters are encouraged.

About 11 million U.S. adults - about one in 20 - have such poor English skills that they can't read a newspaper, understand the directions on a bottle of pills or, in many cases, carry on a basic conversation. About 30 million adults have "below basic" reading skills, according the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) report.

Riders will gather at White Cloud Coffee headquarters in Garden City for breakfast before the event. Registration is $40 for single bikes and $75 for a couple riding two-up. Participants will receive shirts and goodie bags.

For info or to register, see http://www.ride2read.org or contact Peri Cappell at: 208-336-2086

Mothers Day Ride For Our Daughters
May 10-11 2008
West Dover, VT

This event aims to raise awareness of cancer affecting women, and raise funds to benefit research to fight ovarian and breast cancer. The Gray Ghost Inn will manage the event in conjunction with Monadnock Harley-Davidson as sponsoring dealership. The event's open to all clubs and individuals.

The 4Lodges properties in West Dover Vermont will offer accommodations. The 4Lodges, which include the Gray Ghost Inn, the Kitzhof, Big Bears Lodge and The Lodge at Mt. Snow, feature 125 guest rooms combined as well as dining facilities equipped to accommodate over 250 people. The Silo Restaurant will host the dinner and live auction on Saturday.

"We hope to generate over $15,000" said Magnus Thorsson, who is spearheading the event. The 4Lodges will also contributing 20% of the lodging rate of $88 per night for 2 people and 50% of a group dinner priced at $25 per person. The plan would raise approximately $60 per occupied room for the two nights, including the dinner for a total of over $7.000.00 for the weekend not including auctions, raffle or poker run.

Two organizations - The Ovarian Cancer Fund www.ocrf.org as well as the Breast Cancer Research Foundation www.bcrfcure.org - have been named the benefactors of the event.

Live entertainment and transportation within the proximity of the 4Lodges and at the Silo Restaurant will be provided at no charge.

Participation of motorcycle clubs is essential; currently several Ladies Of Harley/HOG chapters as well as Ladies of STAR and GWRRA have shown interest. This is intended to become an annual event and has the potential to grow into a valley wide event.

For info contact Magnus Thorsson at riders@together.net or 800 745 3615290 Route 100 West Dover, VT 05356

Big Bear Choppers 6th Annual Ride The Mountain Rally
June 7-8, 2008
Big Bear, CA

Nearly ten thousand riders rode their machines up to the top of the San Bernardino Mountains for Big Bear Choppers' Fifth Annual Ride the Mountain Rally in 2005, and this year is no exception. In fact, the event is expanding to a 2-day rally. Malcolm Smith Motorsports is the official motorsports distributor with NOS as the official energy drink of the Rally.

Snow Summit Ski Resort in Big Bear Lake, CA is a perfect venue to provide everything a biker needs for his riding destination. Citing a four-fold increase in negative media coverage during the last decade, bans on motorcycles in some communities, attempts to curtail major motorcycle events, anti-tamper legislation, and other limitations of freedom for motorcyclists as the result of complaints about loud pipes, McCaslin says, "We all, every Hog lovin' one of us, must do everything we can to protect our sport and keep it as strong as it is today."

In other words, it's time to pipe down.

This is the second stage of Harley-Davidson's campaign against loud exhaust pipes. Its initial effort last year was directed at and through dealers, with posters and literature that attempted to educate dealers and riders about the negative consequences of loud pipes. Harley-Davidson spokesman Paul James also told Motorcycle Cruiser that during the next few months Harley will cease shipments to dealers of racing exhaust systems that can be fitted to street models. We could no longer find any racing exhaust systems listed on the company's accessory website. However, Harley-Davidson still offers dozens of accessory exhaust systems that are street-legal (and therefore acceptably quiet), including for use in California.

Industry concern over the problem of loud exhaust pipes is nothing new. The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has long warned riders that attitudes shaped by complaints about loud pipes frequently compromise the AMA's efforts to battle anti-motorcycling legislation and regulation. That same concern was echoed by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation a few years ago when it adopted the AMA's stance against loud pipes. The Motorcycle Industry Council has conducted anti-noise campaigns for over 30 years.

These days, the loud motorcycle you hear roaring past is likely to be a modified Harley-Davidson. This is somewhat ironic because Harley was among the first motorcycle makers to tackle exhaust noise a century ago. In the early days of internal-combustion vehicles, many vehicles were annoyingly loud as delivered, but the threat of anti-motor-vehicle legislation soon had automakers fitting mufflers to their vehicles. As McCaslin's message points out, quieting motorcycle exhaust pipes posed greater difficulties because there is no room for a bulky muffler on a bike. However, Harley engineered an effective silencer, and the resulting bike became known as The Silent Gray fellow. Its relative quiet contributed to its reputation as an elegant, advanced machine and helped distinguish Harley-Davidson Motor Company from dozens of rival American motorcycle makers.

Changing to an aftermarket exhaust system has become almost a knee-jerk reaction for many cruiser buyers. However, unless labeled as meeting federal and state standards, all of these exhaust systems are illegal and virtually all are illegally loud. There are exceptions, such as systems offered by Harley that meet requirements for all 50 states or all states except California. Exhaust pipes are changed for a variety of reasons. One is the search for performance improvements, although, as McCaslin and the AMA point out, not all deliver--and some increase power in a portion of the power band while reducing it in others. Some motorcycle owners change exhaust pipes to personalize the appearance. And many who modify their bikes' exhaust systems simply want the noise, often for vanity's sake. Some motorcyclists profess to believe that "loud pipes save lives," although research tends to contradict that popular axiom. (Few of those who say they want exhaust noise for safety's sake use other means--such as brightly colored apparel--which have been proven effective.)

Harley-Davidson's current stance actually puts it on the cutting edge of corporate responsibility regarding exhaust-noise. It is the only company that has both taken an anti-noise stance and offers street-legal accessory exhaust systems as an alternative to loud aftermarket pipes. Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki have never offered nor endorsed accessory systems for their cruisers. Both Victory and Yamaha offer exhaust systems that are not illegally loud as "racing" modifications, though no effort is made to qualify customers by asking for racing credentials. You have to find and click on footnote notices on their sites to learn that that the systems are not legal for the street, and the disclaimer page on Yamaha's site was not working when we visited. Neither company offers legal accessory exhausts. We also asked Yamaha if it had any plans to follow Harley-Davidson's lead on this issue, but we had received no reply to our email a few days later.

As the leader in the cruiser market, Harley's public stance on loud exhaust pipes may finally signal a turning point for an issue that continues to put motorcyclists in a very bad light and prompts increasing calls for restrictions on motorcycles and motorcyclists. Though some riders will try to contend that their noise doesn't really bother anybody, that they have some sort of right to annoy everyone they ride past, or that their noise protects them, such arguments have to sound increasingly hollow when the biggest cruiser-motorcycle maker points out that they are actually risking all motorcyclists' freedoms and asks them to "think about the consequences our actions have on others, before others take action against us."

Harley-Davidson is not simply speaking out about the problems that illegal loud pipes cause for the entire motorcycling community. The Motor Company also offers street-legal accessory exhausts systems and exhaust components for its various motorcycle model families. An alternative to universally loud aftermarket exhausts, the Harley accessory pipes, such as the these 50-state-legal slip-ons for Dyna models, provide a legal option for riders who want to customize.

Photo Gallery: Harley-Davidson Tries To Quiet Motorcycle Noise - Loud Pipes' Cost - Motorcycle Cruiser Magazine

You'll read about the brand-new Star Raider on page 62 of this issue, but Honda's latest VTX1300 variation qualifies as more accessorization of an existing model than full-bore redesign.

The newest muscular middleweight custom follows in the footsteps of its VTX1800 brother (which also got a touring sibling last year, the VTX1800T) but now delivers full touring trim straight from the factory, with a fullsize windscreen, a backrest for passenger comfort and 24-liter leather saddlebags. Meanwhile, the carryover VTX1300R and C models will feature a restyled 2-into-1 exhaust system with bullet-style mufflers for a classic custom look. The VTX1300R also now gets stylish chrome side covers.

Boon For Your Rune
Speaking of Hondas, one model that may be gone from the lineup but is definitely not forgotten is the one-of-a-kind Rune. The discontinued production custom has never really been accessory-friendly, thanks to oddly angled bodywork and one-off component designs. Now, though, comes a company that offers hard luggage for the monster that doesn't look like a couple of Samsonite briefcases strapped to the back. The custom-designed RunePaks from F1 Motoworks claim to blend in with the style of the Rune, and the shape of the bags is said to provide "incredible strength" as well as be aerodynamic. Available in black cherry, clear-coat black and illusion blue, RunePaks start at $1,450 fromhttp://www.f1motoworks.com

Boss Hoss
But back to fossil-fueled rigs: Boss Hoss has announced the newest addition to its line of V-8-powered bikes and trikes. The BHC-3 LS2 is a 425-horsepower motorcycle with an all-aluminum, third-generation General Motors V-8 LS2 small-block with multiport fuel injection for the highest performance. Boss Hoss will no longer produce its 502 big-block cycles due to 2008 emissions standards.

In The Bag
We had nothing but praise for Star's megatourer when we last rode it; the 1784cc, aluminum-framed Stratoliner is comfort and power personified. But there was one fly in the ointment-no matter how you feel about the standard shield (too tall for us), there's simply no denying that the bags are on the skimpy side.

So it was with great interest that we took delivery of a Corbin-customized Strat-dubbed Project Liner-for a jaunt to Vegas Bike Week. Other than a Patrick Racing air-intake kit, the bike is mechanically stock. What Project Liner does flaunt is a plethora of touring amenities-Corbin's Neo Liner fairing (stuffed with an optional sound system), Corbin Fleetliner hard saddlebags, a chin spoiler and a Corbin Dual Touring saddle.

Some 400 miles later, we will admit that the longtime motorcycle accessory maker has come up with another stylishly functional solution to the full-dresser styling blues (Corbin first debuted its uniquely sculpted saddlebags back in 1996). The firm's R&D department did an impressive job of melding old-school appeal with the Star's neo art-deco styling, without skimping on aerodynamic design. It's especially true of the saddlebags; they're hard-mounted, but the top-loading Fleetliner bags are scads more stylish, better visually integrated and far more capacious than the stockers-with 45 liters of storage in each (twice the stocker's), I had no problems carting all my Vegas winnings home. Because the Fibertech (a hybrid polyester similar to fiberglass) bags' walls are said to be molded more tightly to the bike's shape, the Liner should offer better load bearing and balance.

The streamlined fairing is an analogue to the batwing units on Milwaukee's machines, and it's an aerodynamically impressive one. The shape starts at the headlight and flows backward. On the road, I found it parted the wind more smoothly, with less turbulence and buffeting than the stock Stratoliner shield. Subtle details like the center rib, chrome trim and brief-smoked windscreen made for a succulent bit of eye-candy.

As for the seat, well, I've never been a fan of Corbin saddles-they're much too firm, and for me, that meant hot spots after an hour of road time. This time at least the supplied leather-paneled Dual Touring saddle was roomy and nicely shaped. I appreciated the Corbin removable backrest system it came with-it locked in place with a single set screw and was fully adjustable, with a wide contact patch for my back.

All these bits are available separately, and Corbin says installation can be done by an average weekend mechanic. Be warned though-Corbin stuff is designed with tight tolerances in mind, and other accessories can often get in the way of proper fit. So ask about your specific model before you open your wallet.

For the whole scoop, contact Corbin at (800) 538-7035 or visit http://www.corbin.com/yamaha/linermenu.shtml

Photo Gallery: 2008 Honda VTX1300, 2008 Boss Hoss BHC-3 LS2, And More - New Model News - Motorcycle Cruiser Magazine

That's because even experienced riders can be pretty wobbly when they hop on an unfamiliar bike, according to data from the country's largest motorcycle insurer, Progressive.

The study of almost 2 million motorcycle policies over a five-year period finds that riders who switch bikes are nearly 70 percent more likely to crash than riders who keep the same bike.

"Most people already know that riding can be especially dangerous for new bikers," said Rick Stern, a Progressive motorcycle product manager who is also a rider. "But our data shows that the less familiar you are with your bike, the more likely you are to be involved in a collision, regardless of your experience."

The study also found cruiser riders who switch to sport bikes are three-and-a-half times more likely to crash. That's more than double the risk they'd have than if they just switched to another cruiser.

Sport bikers, on the other hand, can reduce their risk by more than a third just by switching to a cruiser.

"We want experienced riders to know their risks so they can take extra precautions when they replace their bikes," said Stern. "It's a good idea for riders to take their new bike out for a couple of shake down cruises in a parking lot before hitting the open road."

Even people who have been riding for years can benefit from practicing the basics on their new bike, Stern said, including low-speed riding, turning, shifting and swerving, and higher-speed panic stopping.

After all, if the goal is to keep the dirty side down and the shiny side up, there's no substitute for experience-and not just experience on the road, but also on the bike.

About Progressive
The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies, in business since 1937, is the country's third largest auto insurance group and largest seller of motorcycle and personal watercraft policies based on premiums written, and is a market leader in commercial auto insurance.

Progressive companies offer consumers choices in how to shop for, buy and manage their auto insurance policies. Progressive offers its products, including personal and commercial auto, motorcycle, boat and recreational vehicle insurance, through more than 30,000 independent insurance agencies throughout the U.S. and online and by phone directly from the Company. At the inaugural Concours in 2006, James debuted his Radial Hell aero bike powered by a 7-cylinder Rotec radial aircraft engine (seen here) to an appreciative crowd.

Other legendary custom builders displaying bikes at this year's Legend of the Motorcycle include Japanese minimalist master Shinya Kimura, Choppers Inc. founder Billy Lane and Brooklyn's Paul Cox. Last year Cox and partner Keino, in addition to displaying two bikes by late friend, business partner and legend Indian Larry, debuted When Push Comes to Shove - a bike the pair built for client Brad Pitt - whose intricate and painstakingly detailed metal engraving was something typically only seen on handmade European shotguns. All three builders plan to unveil new creations at the May event in Half Moon Bay, California as well.

The third annual Legend of the Motorcycle, including the Bonhams & Butterfields auction of motorcycles from the Mike Corbin Collection, takes place the first weekend in May, on the lawns of the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco. The latest J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Motorcycle Competitive Information Study, released in December 2007, measures owner satisfaction with new motorcycles by examining five major components of the overall ownership experience: product; quality; cost of ownership; sales; and service.

Now in its 10th year, the study finds that improvements made in product satisfaction and the dealership service experience have helped drive the increase in overall ownership satisfaction across the industry. Service, build quality and product/performance primarily drive the overall motorcycle ownership experience.

"While overall satisfaction has steadily increased, satisfaction with the sales experience has remained relatively flat since 2003," said Tim Fox, research manager of the power sports practice at J.D. Power. "One bright spot regarding the sales experience is that satisfaction among those who purchase a motorcycle from a single-line dealer has increased slightly over the past five years, while satisfaction among those who purchased from a multi-line dealer has slightly declined."

Despite the increase in overall satisfaction, a small portion of motorcycle owners report that the dealer caused a new problem while repairing their bike. More than 20 percent of owners took their bike in for repairs, and when the work was not performed correctly the first time, 22 percent say that the dealer created a new problem. This also marks a considerable increase from the 2006 study (16%).

"While this only occurs for a few motorcycle owners, dealers should be aware that the number of initiated problems among this subset is increasing," said Fox. "Quality of the work being performed significantly drives satisfaction with service, so it becomes critical to ensure not only efficient service, but also accurate and high quality repairs the first time around."

The study also finds that engine problems account for 40 percent of total reported problems. Specifically, excessive heat; unusual noise; excessive vibration; and the motorcycle stumbling, hesitating or dying are the most frequently reported engine problems. Engine problems have the most notable impact on the overall ownership experience, as those reporting an engine problem are much less satisfied than those owners who did not have an engine problem.

The study also reveals the following:

Fifty-six percent of new motorcycle owners report that they acquired information about the model they purchased from displays on showroom floors. Additionally, 38 percent found information on a manufacturer Web site and 32 percent indicate that a past experience with a particular manufacturer aided them in their purchase decision.

Overall satisfaction with the cost of ownership has increased among motorcycle owners for a second consecutive year, with owners being most satisfied with the initial price and resale value of their bike. Satisfaction with maintenance/repair costs, cost of accessories and insurance has also increased.

Motorcycle owners are strong advocates of their brand and dealer, as 68 percent "definitely will" recommend their brand and 56 percent will recommend the dealer from which they purchased their motorcycle.

"Loyalty and advocacy levels are particularly high among motorcycle owners when compared with owners in the automotive and boating industries," said Fox. "For example, only 47 percent of boat and 35 percent of auto owners say they are loyal to their brand. The motorcycle industry is much more of a niche market where consumers have a particularly strong allegiance to a brand compared with automotive and marine industries."

The 2007 Motorcycle Competitive Information Study includes responses from 8,796 owners who purchased new on-road motorcycles between September 2006 and May 2007. Owners were surveyed in September and October, 2007.

About J.D. Power and Associates

Headquartered in Westlake Village, Calif., J.D. According to the Associated Press, the white-and-blue-spangled motorcycle daredevil died Friday, November 30, in Clearwater, Florida. He was 69. Knievel's eye-popping stunts, which included a jump over Idaho's Snake River Canyon, made him an international icon in the 1970s. Knievel's death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten. He had been in failing health for years. Longtime friend and promoter Billy Rundel said, "It's been coming for years, but you just don't expect it. Superman just doesn't die, right?"

Weather you ride
We're forever checking weather reports prior to and during any trip - even if it's just a daylong ramble up to the mountains. And any touring rider worth his salt knows the weatherman can make our break a weeklong cross-country road trip. Which is why we're pretty jazzed to hear about AccuWeather.com's Forecast Snapshot, announced a few weeks ago. The forecast tool integrates with Google Maps and provides current conditions, 3-day forecasts, weather news headlines, and radar or satellite images for every location on Earth.

The Forecast Snapshot should be particularly appealing to riders because it combines the most popular weather info into a single interface. Even better is the fact that you can access it for both domestic and international locations, easily selected by ZIP code or city and country search.

Accuweather.com's Forecast Snapshot

Chief at last?
Things may be heating up over at Indian Motorcycle - the company finally held a groundbreaking ceremony last October in Lowell, NC at the site of one of its future dealerships. A release stated that this will be the first of 50 dealerships the company plans to have in place by 2010. The new building will feature interior and exterior designs that Indian Motorcycle Dealers across the country will integrate into every shop. The Lowell location is just off I-85 and visible from the interstate.

Other info on the site has been slightly updated as well, with new entries about Indian's history, the head honchos behind the current firm and updated images of the plant and the bike. Along the way, you're still reminded that Indian Motorcycle remains America's oldest and most iconic motorcycle brand. Also, that the 106 year old company's new manufacturing facility is in Kings Mountain, NC. Indian Motorcycle still plans to release a 2009 model year Chief in 2008, and these limited edition bikes can be reserved at www.indianmotorcycle.com

Radio Nomad
You may have caught wind of this several weeks ago, but we'll remind you again: Kawasaki Motors Corp., USA has introduced its first motorcycles with satellite radio through a partnership with XM, the nation's leading satellite radio company.

The all-new, state-of-the-art Premium Audio System can be found on Kawasaki's Vulcan 1600 Nomad touring model. This new system will incorporate XM as an option, which means riders will be able to tune into more than 170 XM channels of music, sports, talk, news, and entertainment. Kawasaki motorcycles sold with XM radios will offer three months of complimentary XM radio service.

With this, Kawasaki becomes the first Japanese bike manufacturer to add XM Satellite Radio to a touring bike. The MSRP of the Premium Audio System is $710.95 and the XM Radio Kit is $442.95, which does not include installation. What's more, it's retrofittable to 2005-2007 Kawasaki 1600 Nomads.

XM has more than 8.2 million subscribers across the continental U.S. See the details at www.kawasaki.com or www.xmradio.com

Photo Gallery: Evel's Biggest Jump Yet; Google gets weather; Indian Gets Serious; Kawasaki Gets Tunes - Motorcycle Cruiser

These days, it's the normal course of business for many companies. The trend continues with the latest announced `alliance', between Harley-Davidson and Shell Oil. Fortunately, this time it looks like it will actually offer benefits to riders. Here's how it'll work: Shell Oil will place all 14,000+ Shell-branded stations and their locations on the online Harley-Davidson Ride Planner, so that gas stops can be planned along any route you're devising.

Harley's Web-based Ride Planner allows motorcyclists to pre-plan road trips utilizing an interactive map that also identifies the locations of authorized Harley-Davidson dealers and soon, Shell-branded stations. We've all been able to look up any gasoline station on the Internet by city or ZIP code, but the Ride Planner will allow riders to identify the locations of all Shell stations along any route. The cool part is that riders will even be able to get an aerial view of the station and its surroundings prior to the trip. As the alliance evolves, more info will be available on the companies' Web sites at www.harley-davidson.com and www.shell.com/us/.

The press release goes on to mention that Harley recommends premium gasoline for its bikes, and these stations all offer Shell V-Power premium gas. It's also interesting to note here that, according to Top Tier Detergent Gasoline (a standard for gasoline performance created by BMW, GM, Honda and Toyota), the minimum level of detergent additive required by the EPA has declined by an estimated 50% over the past several years. Top Tier claims that, as a result, the ability of a vehicle to maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards has been hampered, leading to engine deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions.

Shell is one of the companies that complies with the Top Tier standards, said to be aimed at ensuring optimal engine performance. For a list of other qualifying companies and to read the standard's requirements, go to: www.toptier.com

Another other alliance taking shape in Milwaukee (seems Harley's been busy these days) partners the Motor Company with the world's largest hotel chain - Best Western. The hoteliers are offering the Gold Crown Club International Ride Rewards - a free, themed frequent guest program for Harley-Davidson enthusiasts. Any Harley-Davidson owner or enthusiast can register for the program by going to https://www.goldcrownclub.com/h-driderewards/. Once registered as Gold Crown Club Ride Rewards members, enthusiasts will earn 10 points for every U.S. dollar (or Canadian equivalent) spent on qualified room rates at any of the 4,200 Best Western hotels worldwide. Rewards members can redeem points toward awards such as free rooms, merchandise and gift certificates.

As a complement to Ride Rewards, Best Western will also serve as a preferred hotel for Harley-Davidson's "Great Roads" interactive Web application, found at www.harley-davidson.com/experience. Using Microsoft Virtual Earth, the application maps out a variety of U.S. "Great Roads" and shows Best Western hotels and Harley-Davidson dealerships along the way. Each listing features hotel descriptions along with a directory of services and amenities. A 10 percent savings is available to customers who book their Best Western reservations through this site, or by calling 1-888-224-BIKE.

For more information on Ride Rewards and features of the Best Western/Harley-Davidson partnership, visit www.bestwestern.com or www.harley-davidson.com/experience.

Photo Gallery: Of Motorcycles, Maps, and Gas Stations - Motorcycle Cruiser

Then, last month, the Motorcycle Industry Council said it would contribute an additional $200,000. When you add this figure to the $2.8 million already in the till from Motorcycle Safety companies, total contributions from the industry now equal $3 million. And it's sorely needed.

The study would end a 26 year drought of motorcycle traffic safety information; the last (and most comprehensive) log of data on the causes of motorcycle accidents came out with the Hurt Study in 1981. In over a quarter of a century, however, a lot has changed. Almost 11 million street bikes have been sold in the U.S., and the rider population has swelled to over 6.5 million. Even more significant is the average age of riders. In 1985, the typical rider was 27 years old. Today, he's 41.

"We need new field research that might help us further refine our safety initiatives," said Tim Buche, president of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation."There's a long list of things that have changed over the years". Motorcyclists still tend to be about 0.5% of vehicle miles traveled, Buche said, "but motorcycle fatalities are approximately 10% of all roadway fatalities in the United States."

Changes that have cropped up in recent smaller studies show that more fatalities are now related to negotiating a curve prior to a crash, and more deaths are occurring on rural, rather than urban, roadways. The new study will be based at Oklahoma Transportation Center and conducted by Samir Ahmed, the Oklahoma State University civil engineering professor in charge of the research.Unfortunately, due to layers of governmental bureaucracy, the pilot study won't even begin until spring 2008.

Warning: Distracted Drivers Ahead

In related news, Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations, announced the release of a Public Service Announcement made in conjunction with Nationwide Insurance. In this interview, he discusses how the AMA is trying to reduce motorcyclist fatalities on U.S. roadways.

1) "Distracted Drivers" is the latest public service announcement from The American Motorcyclist Association and Nationwide Insurance. Why on that topic?

EM: Nationwide's recent "Life on the Go" survey found that roads are full of distracted motorists, with 73 percent of respondents admitting they use their cell phone while driving. More evidence is pointing to distracted drivers as the cause of motorcycle crashes involving another vehicle. We wanted to remind drivers to put down their phones, lattes and make-up, and pay attention to the road.

2) With gas prices reaching new highs, more people are purchasing motorcycles and scooters. What advice do you have for new riders?

EM: First, take a motorcycle training safety course. Even if you've been riding for years, you'll find new skills in a safety course. Plus, some companies, like Nationwide, will give you a discount on your insurance for completing a safety course. Second, consider your first bike purchase carefully. A smaller bike may be the best choice for those new to motorcycling.

3) While participation in motorcycling is increasing, there are also more RVs and trailers on the road. What tips would you offer to drivers sharing lane space with motorcyclists?

EM: First, don't simply rely on the rearview and side mirrors to check who is sharing the road with you. It is especially easy for motorcycles to visually disappear within the blind spots on recreational vehicles. Always use your signal and physically turn your head to check before merging. Second, make sure any items you're storing on or outside your vehicle are securely tied down. It's especially critical for drivers towing a trailer to check for adjustments at every stop.

4) I have seen a number of stories lately about the rise in motorcyclist fatalities. What is causing this increase and what can be d
