Open-Road Ramblers: Harley-Davidson Road King, Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 Nomad, Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe Motorcycles Compared

If you are going places, it's hard to find a better companion than one of this trio—Harley's Road King, Kawasaki's Nomad, or Yamaha's Tour Deluxe. From the August 2005 issue of Motorcycle Cruiser magazine.

The Road King's easily detached windshield offers the least weather protection (which is good or bad, depending on the temperature) with a width of 23.0 inches and no standard lowers. Harley's accessory catalog offers plenty of options.

Kawasaki's 26.5-inch-wide shield can be easily lowered two inches, but, at 28.2 inches above the saddle, it is still too high for some riders, measuring. It takes a few minutes of your time with a hex key to strip the lower for better airflow.

Does a windshield really need to rise 31.2 inches above the saddle? Try riding into the evening sun with a couple of hours' worth of bug goo lighting up in front of you. The Yamaha's shield feels wider than its 25.3-inch measurement.

The Harley's saddlebags offer the least carrying volume and an unusual—but effective&151lid arrangement. The bags can be locked or left unlocked for easy access.

We still think the Nomad's bags are the best-looking OE items around. You'll want to put small items in an interior bag to keep them from tumbling out, though.

The Yamaha's bags are sensible and stylish. Tucked in front of the left bag is a helmet lock, but the shape of the bag and seat prevent the lock's use.

The Harley windshield (left) and the Yamaha Windhield (right) pop off in a few seconds without any tools. The Kawasaki shield (center) requires a few minutes with an allen wrench.

If a passenger doeasn't figure in you plans, the quick-release feature of the the Yamaha's backrest makes the transition to boulevard mode a snap.

The instrument nacelle on the Road King delivers the least information of this trio. The Harley's ignition switch behind the speedometer will interfere with a tank bag.

If the array included included a tachometer, the Vulcan's instruments would be ideal. The information's layout makes it easy to take it all in at a glance.

The Royal Star's instrument cluster is the most stylized and nostalgic. In some lighting conditions, however, the bar-style LCD speedometer can be hard to read.
