No Japanese bike has ever come from the factory with a fishtail muffler before, and few bikes of any ilk can boast such an ear-pleasing exhaust note. Long and fat, the muffler not only looks and sounds good, it leaves room for saddlebags and contributes a substantial power increase compared to the A.C.E., which has an otherwise identical engine.

Identical to the A.C.E. except for two internal transmission ratios, the Aero engine makes more power thanks to its large muffler and multiplies that with gearing to run away from the other two Shadow 1100s in top gear.

Besides putting the speedometer up where you can see it, the Aero also locates its warning lights atop the triple clamp, where they can catch your eye. The black button on the triple clamp is the tripmeter reset button.

Fat whitewall tires and deeply valenced fenders help set the nostalgic tone of the Aero's design. However, the twin-piston front brake offers modern braking performance by increasing the brake pad area brought to bear on the disc.

The Aero is the first Honda with rider floorboards. Tapered at the rear to allow more lean angle before they drag, the floorboards fold up when they do touch down. An acorn nut on the underside is the first thing to grind. The rubber pad mounts on a steel insert, which floats inside the polished aluminum floorboard frame to soak up some vibration before it reaches the rider.

Honda provided a guard rail to keep helmets attached to the lock from getting scuffed on the tire. The guard makes a good perch for bungee cords, which can also be hooked under the fender rail. The chrome on the fender rails is flawless.

The shape of the handlebar means the ends hit your legs in full-lock turns.
