When you're given a prime slot to appear on one of the motorcycling world's biggest stages, you better bring your A game. Star has pretty much done that with a new bike unveiling at Daytona Bike Week, debuting a brand-new Star motorcycle -- the Bolt -- on Saturday, March 9th.
Dubbed "...an exciting evolution of the Star brand," the all-new 2014 Bolt and Bolt R-Spec cruisers are powered by the fuel-injected, 942cc air-cooled V-Twin we're so familiar with thanks to its excellent starring role on the V Star 950. The engine may be fairly similar (at least internally), but Star took the opportunity to mount the 60? vee in an all-new double-cradle frame, dropped the seat height, slapped on some upgraded components and topped it all with a simple 3.2 gallon teardrop tank. The mechanicals were basically left exposed for all to see; there's very little bodywork here to muck up the lines. It's easy to buy Star's description of the Bolt and Bolt R-Spec as modern interpretations of old-school bobbers, but with an emphasis on performance. The company is hoping the new machines will attract a new cruiser buyer to the Star brand with its light weight, unmatched maneuverability and unique style. At $7990.00, they just might be on to something.
Performance components such as wave-type brake rotors and a smoked-lens digital meter are standard on both Bolt models, while the Bolt R-Spec ups the ante with the addition of remote-reservoir shocks, a suede-type seat with colored stitching, and special paint and graphics.
Both bikes sport the same 60? V-Twin engines, belt drive, and steel fenders, and both the Bolt and Bolt R-Spec offer a relatively sparse, uncluttered platform ripe for personalization. Star plans to unveil a complete line of custom accessories for the Bolt and Bolt R-Spec in the coming weeks, and from what we've seen (handlebar options, different seats, min fairings, various air cleaner covers), they're on the right track.
The Bolt will be available in two colors -- Raven or Pearl White-- and will retail for $7,990, with bikes hitting dealerships starting this April. The Bolt R-Spec can be had in your choice of Matte Grey or Camo Green, and will retail for $8,290, with those models being available starting in July.
