You might notice the new Honda Shadow Phantom's blacked-out bobber looks first, but beauty is only skin deep and the real news is in the fuel system. Yes, fuel injection is finally coming to Honda's popular Shadow line by way of their Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) which incorporates a single 34mm-diameter throttle body. Fuel injection means optimal fuel delivery, improved performance and better fuel economy. The PGM-FI's automatic enrichment circuit ensures trouble-free startups allowing you hassle-free cruising no matter the conditions.
The Phantom's bad-boy styling is on display with an extensive blackout treatment, bobbed fenders, spoked wheels with black rims and satin-silver accents. Even the new handlebar shape enhances its bobber styling. The revised front fender showcases the new 17-inch wheel and wider front tire. Honda added a beefier 41mm front fork featuring large-diameter matte-finished shrouds and a large billet-aluminum triple-clamp for a distinctive look, neutral handling and a plush 4.6 inches of wheel travel. The low 25.7-inch seat height just enhances the Phantom's low-slung stance. The shaft drive keeps maintenance light so you have more time to rack up the miles.
With owner customization in mind, Honda already has accessories for their new cruiser. The Honda Genuine Accessories include both a tall and low backrest with pad, a rear carrier, boulevard screen, custom leather seat, solo rider rear carrier, cycle cover, front pouch, and synthetic leather saddlebags. The Phantom will be available in any color you would like as long as it's black.
Honda is surely hoping that the Shadow Phantom brings the joy of back-to-basics riding within reach of just about every rider and with an MSRP of only $7,999 it will will be appealing to many. The torquey 745cc 3 valve V-twin mated to a wide-ratio five-speed transmission should be capable of good power over a broad rpm range. However, we would have liked a rear disc brake. -AT
