As we went to press with our February 2010 issue 2 weeks ago (on sale 12/15), we got wind of some late releases Honda would be announcing for its 2010 lineup. Alas, deadlines being what they are, we could only speculate on the specs of each model; even though we pressed the company for particulars, Honda remained tightlipped. All we could say in print was that 3 new machines were coming and leave it at that.
Naturally, all the relevant info came out just after we shipped the magazine, and now we can tell you what we got right and what we got wrong.
Honda has announced 4 new cruisers for 2010, not 3 as we stated in the magazine. Most of the new releases are extensions of its burgeoning VT1300 line, started by the 1312cc Fury a few months back. The new bikes are variations on that 1300 Fury platform, with the new pro street-style Sabre leading the charge ( we called this bike the VT1300Cs in the magazine). It's followed closely by the full-fendered, more traditionally-styled Stateline, which features wider pullback bars and a less aggressive stance. The new Interstate (another name dug up from Honda's past) is basically the Stateline outfitted in touring trim: it adds a custom windshield, leather-wrapped hard saddlebags and floorboards for long days in the saddle. Otherwise, basic running gear for the three are similar, with a 1312cc liquid-cooled fuel injected v-twin providing the power, a five speed transmission with a final shaft drive, a 33-degree rake and a 4.4 gallon fuel tank.
The final release is for a new 750, one Honda calls the Shadow RS. Presumably this builds on the same upgrades introduced with the new Shadow Phantom, and is likely the base model, though Honda didn't roll out any photos to confirm. The official release follows below:
11/12/2009 - Torrance, CA
American Honda Motor Company's Powersports Division announced today its fourth release of 2010 models. The release of these on-road machines follows the earlier announcements of Honda's 2010 powersports lineup.
"These street bikes add even more excitement to our lineup for 2010," said Powersports Press Manager Bill Savino. "Four of these bikes are new V-twins that dramatically expand our line of cruisers. The Sabre, Stateline, Interstate and Shadow RS V-twins unveil new styling and functional variations for Honda buyers, and we're excited about the new opportunities these machines present. This 2010 model year is shaping up very well, with lots of exciting options for Honda fans."
