This far into the season, we'd expected most manufacturers to have firmly announced their 2010 lineups. But in an unexpected sign of industry optimism, the new metal keeps dropping. Witness:
Despite the slew of new bagger releases, Harley-Davidson realizes that the lower-priced, less intimidating Sportsters will only help its long-term appeal. Hence the introduction of the newest member of the XL Dark Custom club-the 2010 Forty-Eight-at the New York IMS a few months back. Sportster aficionados will probably crow about the resurrection of the iconic 2.1 gallon 'peanut' tank on this machine (it was discontinued in 2007), but the 2010 Sportster Forty-Eight also gets the now-ubiquitous bobbed fenders, blacked-out engine, chunky wheel and a lowered rear suspension. The newest XL also features a solo seat dropped at a 26 inch height, with low-profile pull-back handlebars that are more hot-rod than cruiser and under-mounted mirrors to complement the street style. The blacked-out treatment spreads to the air cleaner and engine covers, frame and fenders, so the only hint of glint on the bike is from the shorty dual exhaust. The thick 16-inch black, laced front wheel provides the menace, and rolls between a new fork with wider triple clamps. Up front you get forward foot controls, fork-mounted turn signals, slammed speedometer mounting bracket and fork brace with lightening holes.

The 2010 Sportster Forty-Eight will be available in black, silver and orange Pearl colors sometime this Spring for an MSRP of $10,499.
But wait-there's more from Milwaukee: Harley-Davidson is also releasing another CVO for 2010-the Ultra Classic Electra Glide.
This newest CVO will be serialized and, eschewing the mega-bling piled onto most CVO machines, opt instead for a toned-down, ebony effect. Each unit of this darker version of the classic Harley tourer is serialized from one to 999, and some of the 'blacked out highlights' (Harley's words) include a serialized CB pod insert, assorted pieces culled from the Gloss Black Rumble Collection and a low, 6.5-inch smoked windshield.
The new CVO Ultra also comes with premium features like Brembo brakes and ABS, and a 160-watt CD/AM/FM/WB/MP3 Advanced Audio System by Harman-Kardon, CB and intercom, cruise control, plus standard XM Radio.
Further function is added via a handlebar-mounted Road Tech zumo 660 GPS Navigator along with an integrated automatic lock system. There's also a suspended, dual control heated leather seat and a leather passenger backrest with adjustable lumbar support.

Like the rest of the CVO FL crew, the CVO Ultra is powered by a rubber-mounted, black and chrome Screamin' Eagle Twin Cam 110 engine and a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission. That black powertrain is further complemented by a Crimson Mist Black / Dark Slate and Flame graphics base color. Production of the 2010 CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide will be limited to approximately 999 units and has a suggested retail price of $36,499.
