Tested: Triumph Sympatex Expedition Motorcycle Jacket

Oddly enough, I seem to do the bulk of my long-distance riding during the colder months. As such, I'm always on the prowl for a practical, warm and well-made riding jacket. If it's good-looking and reasonably priced, so much the better.

Constructed of a combination of nylon, Cordura and Sympatex (a solid, nonporous polyester material that's windproof and waterproof), the Expedition is breathable in one direction and water-resistant on the other.

To keep the elements at bay, the Expedition features a front closure with an inner zipper, a hook-and-loop strip and closely spaced snaps on the storm flap. Sizing straps are positioned at all strategic locations to ensure that the jacket fits properly and to help seal it against errant drafts. The outer pockets are double-sealed and waterproof, and plenty big enough to carry anything that could be carried in a jacket.

Other features include leather cuffs, a removable quilted inner liner, CE95-approved body armor at the shoulders and elbows and a dual-density back protector. Reflective patches and piping are located on the front, back and sleeves of the jacket. A waist-connection zipper is supplied so you can fasten the jacket to a pair of Triumph leather or textile pants, and there is also an optional fleece neck warmer. Overall, the Expedition is a rugged, well-made piece of work that has proven to be exactly what I need to cope with chilly days, cold nights and the occasional gully washer.
